Today, Father Marian Marek Piątek, C.Ss.R. of the Vice Province of Bahia, was named Bishop Prelate of the Territorial Prelature of Coari in the state of Amazonas, Brazil by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. He succeeds the Apostolic Administrator, Gutemberg Freire Regis, C.Ss.R., who had first served as Ordinary from 1974 to 2007 and most recently as Administrator from 2009 to 2011. Father "Marcos" joins ten other Redemptorists serving in the episcopacy in Brasil.

Bishop-elect Marcos was born on October 10, 1954 in Tuchów, Poland. He studied philosophy and theology at the Redemptorist seminary in his home city. He made his first profession on September 15, 1974 and perpetual vows on August 15, 1979. He was ordained a priest on June 5, 1980 in the Province of Warsaw. He obtained a doctorate in moral theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome. In 1986 he went to the Vice Province of Bahia as a missionary, serving in the archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia. Bishop-elect Marian also served as formation director of theology students from 1987-1990 and as a Professor of Moral Theology at the Catholic University of São Salvador da Bahia and an instructor at the Higher Institute of Marriage and Family Studies.
